Day 39 - Super Monkey Ball 2

Day 39 - Super Monkey Ball 2

Day 39 - Super Monkey Ball 2

Super Monkey Ball

...Man, Sega don't make 'em like they used too.

I was soo excited to get my Gamecube on launch day in 2002 (back when Games Console launches still took nearly a year to come to Europe from USA & Japan).

The internet was about starting to take off but at the time there was (none to my knowledge) not a place to go for reliable or informatie reviews. So the Gamecube was the last of my days were I'd go into a console launch not really knowing what was good.

I'd seen some basic stuff in "Gamesmaster" magazine that gave me some pictures and information on what genres each games were (useful on the ones that were less obvious), but still...the games I chose on launch day were pretty much a gamble in terms of whether they'd be good or bad.

Super Monkey Ball (1) was one of the best gambling pay outs I've ever had ^_^.

The idea of Super Monkey Ball is similar to that of "Marble Madness" or one of those games you'd get in a ?1 lucky bag where you'd have to roll the silver balls into a cardboard hole.

Very simple in design, but it opened the door to an amazing Action/ Puzzle game that many whom have played it had many MANY hours of good times.

The thing with classic Super Monkey Ball is that not only do you have an amazing single player mode... one that started you off with a light challenge and rose to some insane levels of difficulty. You also had the amazing party games too, most of these could be played in 1 player, but they ALL excelled in multi-player.

I chose "Super Monkey Ball 2" to get the spot on this list of mine due to it being a slight improvement over the original. More party games, more great level designs, and enough time had past to really get the most out of the original alone and with friends to be ready for more.

I still have the saves for both Super Monkey Ball 1 & 2, meaning I've still got all my old high scores on show, as well as my friends too. One thing that I hated about the next wave of Monkey Ball games was that they took away the name entry screen for high scores, meaning you couldn't be reminded of whom set what, which was a great little reason to keep going back to play. I had friends wanting to play if not to beat my score, but to beat my other friends, or simply to wedge in between 2 people and use the name "FUX" (you can see how that works out in between 2 other names >.<).

Games like Monkey Target, and Monkey Bowling, and Monkey Billiards are games I'd pay good money for on there own as a downloadable game on XBLA or something, but the packages as a whole were amazing pieces, and for a long time a good reason to own a Gamecube.

I really wish Sega/ Amusement Vision would go back to the formula they used for Super Monkey Ball's 1 & 2 as the games since have been either too easy, or simple novelties that don't capture the epic-ness of the originals.

Still...regardless of today, Super Monkey Ball will always be remembered by me and many like me as a freaking classic!

**
Oh and the "Dole" Banana's product placement in the game turned me into a big fan of "Dole" fruit products still to this day, they're not quite as common a fruit brand here (in the UK) as they are in other countries, so whenever I saw some "Dole" stuff I'd be reminded of Super Monkey Ball, as well as getting some of my '5 a day' fruit/ veg on.

respecting the right to....

respecting the right to....

be who you are and follow your beliefs.

*secret no. 29*

Like everyone out there, I am myself. But I also respect that others are different than me and have different views/ aspirations/ motivations/ goals/ actions/ etc. I'd like to believe that I'm relatively high on the scale of tolerant.

I am a midwestern democrat. I have a core midwestern attitude and values. I grew up working class and will likely remain there for the rest of my life :) unless the lotto comes through for me :) I have very wealthy friends who live in gigantic houses, never worry where the money comes from, and spend it like it's water. I have friends poorer than me, who hope they can feed their kids. I don't like either one less or more. Nor do I respect them any more or less. I honestly believe that no matter what you make or what your job, we all make a difference in this world. I will treat the janitor the same as the president- I admire you only that you are honest and you work hard at your life.

I am pro choice. I have co-workers and friends who are pro-life. I don't discuss this issue with them b/c while I can't understand removing my choice to choose, it doesn't make me dislike them or want to toss away their friendship. I have bathed, dressed, photographed and handed dead babies to women and men who have wanted those babies for all of eternity only to find they had no brain, missing organs, or a syndrome that is incompatible with life. I have watched their agony at deciding to end life and yet be appreciative of the fact that they have the choice. I have seen women with a strong sense of conviction for the right to life keep these babies full term knowing that they will be dead the moment thy hit the air. I deeply respect their belief in God and their strength to overcome the same loss of life.

I appreciate social services- the aid to those who are less fortunate that we may be.... If ever I'm feeling sad about not being able to buy that 24-70mm i remind myself that I can go to the store and buy the foods that I want without having to fear my children being hungry. Every year I give to a needy family- I did this even in college, when I was so poor that sometimes I didn't eat. I get angry a lot of times at work when the medicaid mom comes in with her 10th kid and has the nerve to tell me she doesn't have a car seat, a drop of formula, or any diapers for her baby at home. And yet it's not my place to judge whether or not she is more or less valid in her choice to have those babies or if she loves them less than someone richer.

I love that I get the choice to vote. The first time I voted was in 1992 and I get very excited to see people in line. I respect that we all have the right to make choices- whatever they may be. I don't think I have any close friends voting for McCain but that's not on purpose. I have numerous work friends that will vote for him and this week I have respected the considerate conversations we have had in the breakroom. I hope you all voted today. I wish all of our voices could/ would be respected by our friends and neighbors. Life will go on no matter who wins... I never voted for Bush and yet I've managed to make it for the last 8 years: with the birth of three great children, with the love of family and friends, and with a lot of hard work. Hurray to all who made it out today!! I hope your lines were not too long!
